Narrative structure and devices in 19th and 20th century prose; narrative theory; the short story; humor/comedy in literature and film; Jewish humor in Russia and the Soviet Union; the treatment of "epiphanies" by Isaac Babel and
other writers, especially epiphanies induced by aesthetic experiences.
