Medieval and early modern Russian history; Russian, Ukrainian, and Cossack identities; comparative frontiers and boundaries; folklore.

Current Projects
Revising manuscript "Shifting Boundaries on the Don Steppe Frontier: Cossacks, Empires and Nomads to 1739" on integration of the Don region into the Russian Empire; writing articles on "Fabricating Medieval Russian Rule in the Caucasus: A re-evaluation of the Stone of Tmutarakan';" and researching a monograph on "Community and Identity in the Kuban' Region."
